What is National Pension System(NPS)?
The National Pension System (NPS) is a government-backed retirement savings scheme in India that helps individuals systematically invest during their working years to build a pension corpus, offering market-linked returns and ensuring financial security after retirement.
How to Invest in NPS?
You can invest in NPS by opening an account online through the official NPS portal or via authorized banks and financial institutions, selecting your preferred investment option (equity, corporate bonds, or government securities), and contributing regularly with flexible amounts to grow your retirement savings.
Different Types of NPS Account
- Tier I Account : Primary retirement account with withdrawal restrictions
- Tier II Account : Voluntary savings account with flexible withdrawals
- Corporate NPS : Offered by employers for employee retirement benefits
- All Citizen Model : Open for any Indian citizen individually
- NPS Lite / Atal Pension Yojana : Designed for low-income groups
Taxation of NPS
NPS offers tax benefits under Section 80C and an additional deduction under Section 80CCD(1B), allowing investors to save tax while building retirement wealth.
At the time of maturity, a portion of the corpus (up to 60%) can be withdrawn tax-free, while the remaining amount must be used to purchase an annuity, which provides regular pension income.
The annuity income received after retirement is taxable as per the individual's income tax slab, making it important to plan withdrawals and income accordingly.
